What is NOT in our products

"He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion." ~Unknown

Sadly, most consumers have no idea what is really in their dog's food, because the companies often hide true definitions to their ingredients. A great example would be feet & feathers. Chicken's feet and feathers may be used as a protein source, once melted down into a digestible form. Here are several popular ingredients used in dog food, along with brief explanations.

Animal By-Product -A secondary or inferior product resulting from producing a primary food. The feet and feathers mentioned above are both by-products of poultry processing. The two ingredients would basically be steamed until they become a gel-like substance. They would then be used as a protein source, and be classified as Poultry By Product.

Animal Digest
- Can be made up of all sorts of things....Feces, other animal parts (Beaks, Feet), contents of stomachs. The only rule regarding this ingredient is that it must be made into a soluble, digestible form.

Meat Meals
- (Chicken, Beef, Lamb, Poultry, Fish, & Bone Meal): Ground product of animal feed grade ingredients. May consist of necks, feet, bone, blood, intestines, and viscera ground into a useable protein source. While containing more meat then a by-product, there is still no measurable amount of useable meat, although it is again still considered a protein source.

Bloody Sawdust
- Used to soak up the blood on the slaughterhouse floor, it too may be in your dog's food.

The 4-D's
- Otherwise known as "Dead, Dying, Diseased, and Deformed" animals, unfit for human consumption, which are immediately passed on to the dog food manufacturers.

Rancid Fats
- While you won't see it listed as rancid, many fats used in dog food are indeed bad. Often used fats are the cheap animal fats, rather then a canola, fish, or safflower oil which is rich in linoleic acids.

S
ucrose - SUGAR comes in all sorts of forms, such as high fructose corn syrup. Unlike humans, dogs do not turn sugar into energy very easily. Sugar should be avoided.

BHT
- Butylated Hydroxytoluene. A preservative very commonly found in dog food. It is thought to cause fetal abnormalities and liver damage.

Propylene Glycol
- Used for texture, this chemical is known to cause severe illness in dogs.

Ethoxyquin
- Another common preservative, originally intended to be used in the production of rubber. Has been known to cause all sorts of health related issues with dogs, even autoimmune disease.

What IS in our products

The average dog can consume 35-40 lbs. of chemical preservatives a year. Cancer rates in dogs have increased, as well as starting at earlier ages than ever before. Even the average life expectancy of our dogs has been decreasing at alarming rates.

Processed grains have many nutritional benefits stripped away to produce white, fluffy flour. My Best Friends Biscuits wants to ensure those nutrients are kept in by using minimally processed grains such as oatmeal and ground flax seed. These whole grains provide insoluble and soluble fibre, important for the health of your dog's digestive system. Whole grains also contain many vitamins and minerals including the vitamin B family (B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, folic acid), vitamin E, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, copper and selenium.

Oats - they have an additional health benefit called beta-glucan. Human research with this fibre has shown positive results for heart health, blood sugar responses (diabetes research) and enhancing the immune system.

Flax - This nutritional powerhouse contains 70% polyunsaturated fatty acids known as omega-3 and omega-6, as well as a number of antioxidants, protein and fibre. Omega 3 can help in reducing skin irritation and arthritis. Dogs can get too much of a good thing though if over supplemented with pure omega-3 oil, therefore whole flax seed provides a good balanced dose. Flax oils will give your dog a shiny, healthy coat worthy of a thousand snuggles. And if that isn't enough reason to want flax in your treats, flax lignans, which are considered an antioxidant, are useful in blocking the action of cancer-causing substances in the body. What more could you want from one lowly seed?

Fruits and Vegetables - are good for dogs and add sources of vitamins, minerals and fibre.

Sweet potatoes - have beta-carotene, protecting your best friend’s eyes, skin, liver and lungs while boosting the immune system.

Apple Sauce - contains anti-oxidants, vitamins, minerals and fibre. It also adds natural sweetness to the biscuits and is especially good for the heart and brain.

Peanut Butter - We aren't talking about the kind with the big squirrel on the front. You know the one with all the added sugar, salt and other ingredients. The peanut butter we use is just ground up peanuts - nothing more. Peanuts are a great source of protein, good fats including omega-6, previously mentioned with flax (think shiny coat), soluble fibre and oodles of minerals including zinc, magnesium copper and iron; important for the production of red blood cells.

Eggs - "are a great source of protein and fat. The yolk contains most of the fat and nutrients such as vitamin E, biotin, and lutein, good for eyes, health, skin, and helps your best friend metabolize other nutrients."

Herbs - like basil, parsley, rosemary and oregano contain antioxidants that can protect from cancer causing agents and improve overall health. They have excellent antioxidant properties and add great flavours that dogs love.

Cinnamon - is an ancient favourite for helping digestion and respiratory issues, lowers blood sugar levels and dogs love it.

Garlic - contains antioxidants, boosts the immune and circulation system and helps with liver and intestinal function. It is also known to eliminate fleas and ticks and neutralize bad breath.

Canola Oil - is a good source of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids, which is important for your dog’s immune system, joint health, skin and coat. Dogs must get their essential fatty acids from their food. Vitamin E and K are also found in canola oil, required for proper blood clotting.

Barley - High in fiber and protein. Low gluten, ideal for pets requiring low gluten in their diet.

Beef - provides vitamin B12, selenium, zinc and iron. Beef is a quality protein source for pets, as it supports muscle and brain function.

Carrot - The richest source of pro-vitamin A carotenes among commonly consumed vegetables. Beta carotene is also a powerful antioxidant. Also, contains vitamins B, C, D, E, K, riboflavin, niacin, calcium, potassium, phosphorus, sodium, and iron.

Chicken - One of the most common protein sources in pet food. Chicken provides high quality protein and amino acids that pets need for energy and physical development/maintenance. As well as enhancing palatability, low ash chicken fat is the most digestible animal fat source available. This is a liquid at room temperature which indicates a higher level of polyunsaturated fatty acids compared to fats which are solid at room temperature and are higher in saturated fatty acids. A good source of Arachidonic acid (elongated form of Omega 6) and Linoleic (Omega-6) Acid.

Cranberry - packed with vitamin C, potassium and antioxidants. Vitamin C assists animals with compromised immune systems, urinary tract problems (acidify the urine) and arthritis.

Flaxseed - rich source of essential fatty acids. Flaxseed contains bioactive compounds called lignans which are proven to prevent cancer because of their antioxidant activity, and a great source of fiber, helping preventing diabetes. The benefits of the other two substances, alpha-linolenic acid (a type of omega-3 fatty acid) and lignans, suggests that these components may be helpful in prevention of heart disease, diabetes and perhaps in treatment of chronic kidney disease. It's also an excellent source of protein, B vitamins and iron.

Garlic - Garlic helps stabilize blood pressure and gives a good solid boost to the immune system, keeping at bay infections of various sorts, particularly upper respiratory tract infections. Potatoes - provides B vitamins, carbohydrates, vitamin C, potassium, iron, and magnesium.

Peppermint - Similar to many spices and herbs, is believed to have medicinal properties when consumed. It is said that it helps against upset stomachs, inhibits the growth of certain bacteria, and can help smooth and relax muscles.

Spinach - Spinach contains twice as much iron as most other greens. It is a rich source of antioxidants. Besides beta-carotene, it also supplies two other carotenes, lutein and zeaxanthin. It is a good source of fiber, calcium, potassium and vitamins A, B6 and K.

Squash/Pumpkin - good source of vitamin E (Alpha Tocopherol), Thiamin, Niacin, vitamin B6, Folate, Calcium and Magnesium, and a very good source of vitamin A, vitamin C, Potassium and Manganese. Also low in sugar. Can relieve constipation for cats and dogs.

Salmon - Salmon contains the highest concentration of omega fatty acids. Proven to ease arthritis and hip dysplasia. The omega fatty acids promote a healthy heart and glossy coat. It improves hair growth and brain function and inhibits the growth of cancer cells.
